Taylor & Taylor’s Super 8 Wedding Film at Sycamore Bend Estate
Taylor & Taylor’s Super 8 Wedding Film at Sycamore Bend Estate
Taylor and Taylor Webster’s wedding at Sycamore Bend Estate was captured entirely on Super 8 film using a Canon 310XL.
Their wedding took place on Saturday, September 14th, 2024, during a cool, breezy, rain-filled day in Wilmington, North Carolina. Heavy bands of rain moved through the area as tropical moisture streamed in from a stalled weather system offshore, which made filming on Super 8 more challenging than usual.
Thankfully, the rain gave us just enough breaks throughout the day. One of the best parts of the day was that they were still able to have a beautiful outdoor ceremony in the alley in front of the barn. With the weather moving in and out, the day had a mood and atmosphere that actually worked beautifully on Super 8.
A rainy wedding day at Sycamore Bend Estate
Rain can make a wedding day more complicated, especially when working with real motion picture film. Super 8 cameras are small, mechanical, and not something you want exposed to heavy rain. Because of that, filming this wedding required patience, timing, and being ready to shoot during the windows when the weather gave us a break.
But the rain also added something special to the final film. The soft light, movement in the trees, overcast skies, and quiet moments between rain bands gave the wedding a nostalgic feeling that fit the texture of Super 8 beautifully.
Sycamore Bend Estate already has a timeless quality, and the weather gave the day an even more emotional, cinematic feel.
Filmed entirely on Super 8
This wedding film was shot entirely on Super 8 using a Canon 310XL. Super 8 has a feeling that is hard to describe until you see it. The grain, softness, movement, color, and flicker all work together to create something that feels personal and nostalgic.
It does not feel like a traditional wedding video. It feels more like a memory.
For Taylor and Taylor’s wedding, that was exactly the right fit. The day had a relaxed, emotional, and intimate feeling, and Super 8 preserved that in a way that feels honest and timeless.
Kodak 200T and 500T motion picture film
Most of the wedding day was filmed on Kodak 200T, which worked beautifully with the soft, overcast light and the outdoor ceremony setting. As the day moved into the evening reception, we switched to Kodak 500T to better handle the lower light.
That is one of the things I love about shooting real film at weddings. Each film stock has its own character. Kodak 200T has a beautiful softness and color in mixed or softer light, while Kodak 500T brings more sensitivity for darker reception spaces and evening moments.
Together, the two stocks helped preserve the full feeling of the day, from the outdoor ceremony to the reception.
Why Sycamore Bend Estate works so well on Super 8
Sycamore Bend Estate is one of those venues that naturally fits the look and feeling of Super 8 film. The barn, the grounds, the open space, the trees, and the Southern atmosphere all have a timeless quality.
For this wedding, the ceremony took place outside in the alley in front of the barn, which gave the film a beautiful sense of place. The rain, wind, and overcast light made everything feel softer and more atmospheric.
Super 8 does not need a perfect day to feel beautiful. Sometimes the imperfect conditions are what make the final film feel more real.
A nostalgic way to remember the day
Taylor and Taylor’s wedding film is a reminder of why I love shooting weddings on real film. The final result is not overly polished or overly produced. It feels like something pulled from a family archive. Something personal. Something that becomes more meaningful with time.
The small imperfections are part of the beauty. The grain, the movement, the exposure shifts, the softness, and the feeling of the day all become part of the memory.
For couples who are drawn to old home movies, analog texture, and a more nostalgic way of remembering their wedding day, Super 8 offers something incredibly special.
